Maravillas Bags – Bags from Mallorca

The label Maravillas Bags stands for handcrafted leather bags and accessories from Spain. In their studio in the heart of Palma de Mallorca, modern urban design is combined with traditional craftsmanship. Anyone can visit this place as transparency is one of the top priorities of the label founder and designer Christina Bussmann. She works only with people who have a long history of workmanship with leather and the label is very keen on staying in personal touch with the workers. Furthermore this local production eliminates the need for long transports and by this reduces emissions.

Choice of Materials

The process of choosing the leather and other materials is a passionate affair for Christina as quality and naturalness are terms she believes in.

All bags are available in vegetable tanned leather, and – quite new at Maravillas Bags – is a material which is a sustainable leather alternative made from the fiber of the pineapple leaves. Finally, a green alternative to traditional petroleum based leatherettes and ideal for vegans and other animal lovers.

Vegetable tanned leather is tanned using purely natural substances for tanning such as roots, bark, and leaves from olive trees, oak and rhubarb – thus the leather remains a noble and safe product of nature. The unsealed surface is breathable, feels warm and supple, and is free of carcinogenic or allergenic chemicals.

The vegetable tanned leather is obtained from local Spanish leather factories with a long tradition of artisanal vegetable tanning methods. It is one of the most environmentally friendly leathers worldwide.

Every bag is a naturally unique piece and is allowed to display its lifecycle in form of uneven wrinkles and scars – naturalness mustn’t be hidden. Furthermore, every bag matures to an individual one-of-a-kind piece by light, time and touch.

Pineapple leatherette is an innovative, natural and sustainable non-woven textile made from pineapple leave fibers as an alternative to leather and petroleum based alternatives.
The pineapple leaves are a by-product of the pineapple harvest, thus no extra water, fertilizers or pesticides are required and the waste of the harvest is minimized.

This leather replacement is strong, versatile, breathable, soft, light, flexible, and has passed the ISO international standards tests for: seam rupture, tear resistance, tensile strength, light
and colour fastness and abrasion resistance.

About Christina Bussmann

Christina finished her studies as a certified fashion designer in Florence. After working in the costume & film industry in Berlin she moved to Mallorca together with her family, to the beautiful village Las Maravillas – by the way the origin of the name of her label. In Mallorca, Christina started to get to know more about leather and work with it. Bags produced in masses weren’t interesting for her, but the material leather with its unique texture was indeed. So she started to create and sew bags only for her family and friends. This success was such a motivation for her that she started her own label Maravillas Bags.
